Hello from the beautiful sandy shores of the #Hatian island of #Tortuga which lies just off the coast of the #dominicanrepublic.
I am just taking a breather from hole digging, and thought it a good time to catch up with you.
This small mountainous island is one I've seen in many a pirates film such as #piratesofthecaribbean and in literature like #captainblood. But I think the real history is more fascinating as this really was a pirate stronghold.
Tortuga was first visited by Europeans in 1492 when it was discovered by the #spanish explorer #columbus.
#ChristopherColumbus thought the island shape reminded him of a turtle so he named it Tortuga!
Following columbus's discovery it then was also inhabited by #French and #British settlers. The three groups fought over the island until ultimately deciding the island was too small to be of major importance in 1638. This left the island open to becoming a stronghold for #caribean #pirates. Now that is cool!
I've done a bit of hiking and been to see the ruins of the 17th century #fortdeRocher that lies on the south coast of the island.
Tomorrow I'm going to try and find the cave known as #GrotteauBasin which has a large pre columbian statue of a woman inside it.
But first I need to burry my treasure, my prized possessions need to be kept safe....
I will catch up with you on Friday
